Chaconne was written as a composition assignment given to me by my theory teacher at the time, the composer Hans Eklund, when I was studying to be a piano teacher at the Stockholm School of Music (about two years before I started the composition programme):
a harmonic sequence in six bars that is repeated and varied throughout the piece. The different tempi are an important means of variation and at the same time a unifying factor: a network of pulse relations between the variations. The Chaconne theme is like a global wave motion, its variations likewise, but with varying heights and depths, intensity and rest: one wave falls out of another.
